Operation IRINI is ready to monitor the ceasefire agreement in Libya

Libyan Cloud News Agency – Rome

The commander of the European Union Naval Force Mediterranean Operation IRINI, Admiral Fabio Agostini, said that the operation is ready to monitor the ceasefire agreement in Libya if requested by the United Nations and the Libyan authorities and with the consent of European countries.

In an interview with the Adenkronos media group, Agostini explained that a stable Libya should be truly everyone’s goal to increase the levels of security in the region and improve the living conditions of the population bordering the Mediterranean.

“It will also help regulate and reduce migration flows towards the southern shores of the European Union.” He added.

Agostini added that Operation IRINI has developed strong experience in monitoring activities not only at sea, but also in the air and on land.

Agostini indicated that IRINI may end on the day when the European Union’s military contribution will not be necessary to support the outcomes of the Berlin process regarding a peaceful solution to the Libyan crisis.
