The Italian Foreign Minister: Al-Sarraj’s decision to resign is a courageous choice

The Italian Foreign Minister, Luigi Di Maio, said that the intention of the Head of the Presidential Council of the Government of National Accord, Fayez Al-Sarraj, to resign depends on the establishment of an effective institutional structure based on a political agreement by the Libyan parties.

Di Maio said during a joint press conference with his Turkish counterpart, Mevlut Cavusoglu, at the Italian Foreign Ministry on Friday, that Al-Sarraj’s decision to resign and leave the political arena is a courageous and responsible choice.

He reaffirmed that the roadmap announced by the United Nations is bearing fruit, describing the work carried out by the Acting Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Libya, Stephanie Williams, as commendable, urging all foreign players who have an impact on the Libyan parties to push them towards dialogue.

Al-Sarraj had announced in a televised speech last month his intention to resign by the end of this October.
