Libyan Cloud News Agency – Tripoli

Three human rights organizations have condemned the threat to sports journalist Ahmed Jumaa by the former president of Al-Ahly Tripoli Club.

The three organizations said that the treat is a serious indication of targeting journalists with arrest and beating.

The Libyan Organization for Independent Media, New Organization for Sports Media, and the Libyan Foundation for Investigative Journalism stated that the threat occurred on Friday, December 9, 2022, when the former president of Al-Ahly Tripoli Club telephoned the journalist Jumaa and threatened to arrest and beat him if he did not disclose his sources regarding a report he wrote about to the club’s elections.

The former president asked the journalist to disclose his sources, but when the journalist refused, he said to him in an explicit and public threat: “They will bring you, and the stick will make you confess.”

The three organizations held the security authorities responsible for the personal safety of the journalist.

They also denounced the silence of the competent authorities regarding the violations and threats against journalists and activists committed by anyone who tries to prejudice freedom of opinion and expression and silence them, reminding the Ministry of Interior of its responsibility to protect them.
