Human rights organizations call for lifting arbitrary restrictions on freedom of association

Libyan Cloud News Agency – Tripoli

21 human rights organizations and more than 50 Libyan public figures and institutions have called the Civil Society Commission in Tripoli to lift arbitrary restrictions on freedom of association and adopt the draft law on formation of civil societies that was referred to it last October as soon as possible.

A statement signed by those organizations and the public figures and institutions referred to the escalation of a repressive campaign against civil society organizations and human rights defenders in Libya, including arbitrary detention, defamation and incitement.

The statement noted that the authorities imposed arbitrary restrictions through the Civil Society Commission in Tripoli on the activities of human rights organizations, in violation of the Libyan Constitutional Declaration and international standards for freedom of association.

The statement stressed that the issue of freedom of association is one of the priorities of the Libyan people, and that it is imperative to respect the desire and aspirations of the Libyans to build a state of law with respect for human rights and democratic values.
