The General Authority for Monitoring Media Content and a number of international and regional organizations have signed in Tunis a roadmap for the safety of journalists in the Arab region, at the end of the regional conference on the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists.
The head of the authority, Jalal Othman, said that the roadmap calls for preventing crimes against journalists and increasing targeted capacity-building programs on topics ranging from physical safety and psychological well-being, to digital safety and legal knowledge, in addition to strengthening awareness campaigns on the safety of journalists for all segments of society, including security forces and judicial actors.
According to UNESCO, the roadmap aims to create a guiding framework to enhance the protection of journalists in the Arab region. It is designed as a living document to identify the ongoing and emerging challenges facing journalists in the Arab region, a decade after the adoption of United Nations Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
The General Authority for Monitoring Media Content, the Libyan Organization for Independent Media, Article 19 Organization, the International Federation of Journalists, IFEX, Reporters Without Borders, the International Federation of Journalists, and the Independent High Authority for Audio Communication in Tunisia, signed the roadmap.
