Libyan Cloud News Agency – TripoliThe United Nations World Food Program (WFP) in Libya welcomed a contribution from Japan, amounting to about 1.53 million US dollars to support the distribution of food aid in the west and east of the country. The contribution is part of a project that aims to provide food assistance to more than 10,000 people.Recently, the Government of Japan confirmed a new contribution of half a million US dollars to provide food assistance to approximately 8,500 displaced persons, host communities and returnees in the south of the country, who suffer from high food prices due to the global situation, including the war in Ukraine. The Representative of the World Food Program and Country Director in Libya, Maysaa Alghribawy, welcomed the Japanese initiative, expressing the program’s gratitude to the Government of Japan for these generous contributions, which come at a critical time when the world is struggling with many crises due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and the conflict in Ukraine. For his part, the Japanese Chargé d’Affairs to Libya, Masaaki Amadera, said that food security is one of the main sectors supported by Japan, in line with the Food Security in Africa initiative, which was launched at the sixth round of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development held in Nairobi in 2016.He added that Japan will not only support contributions to provide food, but will also support school feeding activities that will contribute to achieving three other goals which are supporting children’s education in schools, stimulating local markets and agriculture, and creating job opportunities for local communities.
